Lynn Hummel was raised in Garrison, North Dakota and took his pre-law studies at what is now Minot State University and his law studies at the University of Minnesota. He received a Bush Fellowship in 1969 and studied at the Harvard Law School and Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.

Hummel was president of the Seventh Judicial District Bar Association in 1982-1983, a member of the Seventh Judicial Ethics Committee from 1979-1985, Chairman of the District Ethics Committee from 2000-2004 and is presently a board member of the State Lawyers Professional Responsibility Board.

Hummel has offices in Detroit Lakes where he practices in the areas of personal injury, civil litigation, employment law and general practice. He is a licensed mediator and also teaches Tort Law and Business Law to paralegal students at the Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Detroit Lakes.

Hummel and his wife Beverly have three grown children. The Hummels are members of the choir at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. Lynn has been active in community and industrial development and is currently a board member of the Holmes Community Center in Detroit Lakes.
